Episode 7 of the IT Security Pubcast.

In this Episode the Pubcast reflects on IT Security’s beginnings. We interview Rob Bradfield, a security practitioner for 25 years about how security has evolved during his career.

IT Security is a complex environment, embracing multiple technologies, standards, processes, qualifications and disciplines. Any new entrant to the field has the opportunity to select from a range of potential careers, is likely to be at the forefront of IT developments, and will find a multitude of potential developmental paths.

In short, IT security exhibits all the attributes of a mature discipline.  But 25 years ago it was a fledgling and little understood area in IT, with unclear reporting lines, few principles and fewer technologies.  We interview Rob Bradfield, a practitioner that has been involved in mainframe IT Security since it was new. Rob describes how it all began, how the organization grappled with the placement of the team, and how differently the organization viewed the risks at the time.

But the most surprising conclusion is that the problems that the early professionals faced still persist; and that technologies such as Identity and Access Management are just new perspectives on old issues.
